About Us
I first opened Green Gables at St. Paul's Church, in October 1989. However, we are now located at nearby St. Georges-in-the-East Church on the corner of The Highway and Cannon Street Road, Wapping.
I first became interested in the Montessori approach to learning during the late 1970's, having qualified as a Nursery Nurse in 1975.
I continued with my career working in senior positions for Social Services, in three inner London boroughs. This was followed by opportunities to work in day care centres in Israel, Australia and Majorca. I also spent two and a half years setting up and managing a crèche for 0-6 year olds in Saudi Arabia.
After a short stay in Australia gaining my Mothercraft Diploma in Sydney, I returned to the East End late 1987. It was then that I became aware of the lack of Montessori schools in this part of London.
This inspired me to try to offer the same unique education that children in other parts of London were benefiting from.
Thus Green Gables was born.
The success of the nursery school, and growing interest in Montessori education for younger children, prompted me to offer care and education for a toddler class with children aged between 18 months and 3 years old.
In 1996 we further extended learning opportunities for the older children and opened the doors of the primary class, which caters for children up to 7/8 years old. This gives parents the unique opportunity to provide for their children's continuity of education following the Montessori approach to learning.
Not one to stand still and let the grass grow, I have now also established an Infant class for twelve babies aged 3 - 18 months. This class has been operating since September 2000 with great success.
In September 2006 we moved to spacious, purpose built accomodation in the local area. Apart from four lovely classrooms we also have two beautiful through the wall fish tanks which link all the classes. We also have a stunning 9000sq ft garden exclusively for our own use.
Naturally, we are very proud of what has been achieved and so look forward to meeting you at Green Gables in the near future.
Regards,
Jacqueline Brierley
